Lightning Protection: Oregon
Oregon sees on average of 438,082 cloud to ground lightning strikes annually. With all the outdoor activities to do in Oregon (hiking, fishing, camping, hunting, prospecting, etc), it is important to look at the weather forecast before venturing out in the wild and plan accordingly.
With 46.2% of the state being public (31.4 million acres), Oregon is an outdoorsman’s paradise. Thunderstorms are more common in the eastern part of Oregon then in the central or western part. This may be attributed to the colder air coming off the Pacific Ocean, not having a chance to warm up to create the recipe for thunder storms.

Lightning Fact!
While lightning storms are impressive in their own right, they don’t quite compare to the spectacle when volcanic eruptions trigger lightning strikes. When an eruption occurs, earth and ash are thrown into the air in a giant plume, colliding to create an electrical charge.
In the same way as normal lightning, the imbalance between the plume’s electrical charge and the charge in the atmosphere leads to lightning strikes.
