Receiving 60 days of thunderstorms annually, Arkansas is no stranger to lightning, with 1,026,235 cloud to ground strikes in 2008 alone. On average, Arkansas has 750,747 cloud to ground lightning strikes annually and an average of 14.1 strikes per square mile!
From 1959-1999, Arkansas has had 122 lightning related fatalities, which puts them in the top 20 in the nation for lightning related deaths. In the past three years (2010-2008), lightning has injured 13 and killed one person in Arkansas.
