The Lightning Protection Institute
In order to insure quality, superior craftsmanship and proper installation,
the Lightning Protection Institute (LPI)has established specific
guidelines on materials, workmanship and inspections of all certified
systems.
Established in 1955, the Lightning Protection Institute (LPI) is a national not-for-profit organization comprised of manufacturers, contractors, and designers including architects and engineers. The Lightning Protection Institue (LPI) offers national certification of correct lightning protection system installations and of the professional members who have qualified as experienced and knowledgeable. The certification of a lightning protection system's design and installation process is paramount to maintaining quality control and upholding industry standards. Lightning protection technology is a specialty discipline and the expertise required for design and installation is not available through many uncertified contractors or installers. Contacting a certified professional can save you time, money and possibly your life! Certification of a lightning protections system assures that national standards are met including those set forth by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 780) and the Underwriter's Laboratories (UL 96A). Certification places requirements on design, materials, workmanship and inspection based on the LPI-175 Standard of Practice. Journeyman Installers must pass two levels of tests for LPI Certification. Master Installers must pass a series of four tests, and Professional Design / Inspectors must pass three tests on system layout and inspection criteria. Annual re-testing is required for continued certification. To verify a Master Installer's credentials, request to see the identifying brass card carried by LPI certified individuals. Verification can be obtained by contacting the Lighting Protection Institute at: 1-800-488-6864 |
