Utah sees, on average 247,766 cloud to ground lightning strikes annually and averages 2.9 strikes per square mile. From 2001 to 2010 Utah ranked # 20 in fatalities from lightning strikes with 7 reported. According to The Smithsonian/NASA Astrophysics Data System, 4.7 lightning related damage claims were filed per every 10,000 people in the three state regions of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming with a total of 6,755 claims being filed between 1987-1993 with an average of $916 paid per claim (which is $1,760 in 2012 dollars!).
