Information on Lightning Protection in Quebec, Canada

With most lightning strikes occurring in June, July and August Quebec averages between 0.52 to 1.27 cloud to ground lightning strikes per square kilometer. The lightning season is longer in the southern and western portions of the province.

In July, 2012, two young men were rock climbing in a remote area near Quebec City when lightning when lightning struck one of the men and killed him. There is no safe place outdoors when there is a thunderstorm. If you cannot get to a substantial building or to a hard topped vehicle, avoid open fields, hill or ridge tops, tall or isolated trees and away from water. If you are in the forest, try to stay near a lower stand of trees. These actions may slightly reduce your risk of a lightning strike. The best way to avoid a lightning strike is to plan ahead and plan accordingly to the weather.
