Information on Lightning Protection in the state of Hawaii
On one day in February 2011, the state of Hawaii saw about 21,000 lightning strikes! This particular storm had a lightning bolt that struck a steeple on a church and blew off a section of the roof! It also struck a fishing boat and fried the electronics and left the men on board stranded.
Lightning protection is available for structures and for boats. It is important to remember that there is no place safe outdoors when you hear thunder, if you can hear the thunder; you are close enough to be struck by lightning. If you hear thunder, seek shelter immediately in a substantial building, stay off corded phones, out of the bath or shower and away from electronics and appliances plugged into the wall. It’s recommended that you wait at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder to return outdoors.
