Lightning is very common in Alberta. For instance, in 2010, Alberta saw about 494,500 cloud to ground lightning strikes! That’s about 1.94 strikes per square mile! Many areas in Alberta saw over 5,000 cloud to ground lightning strikes in 2010 as well. Alberta sees many thunderstorms in the summer and some of them are classified as severe.

June 23, 2015 A lightning strike on a roof was blamed for a fire that completely destroyed a home near Onoway, Alberta. The owner tried to put the fire out herself instead of calling the fire department or they might have saved the home which was a total loss.
