Lightning Protection in Iowa

Spring is the severe weather season in Iowa. On average, the state sees 50 days of thunderstorms annually bringing an average of 35" — 40" of rainfall in the South East portion of the state and 25" —30" in the North West portion of Iowa. The state also sees on average 609,474 cloud to ground lightning strikes which equates to 10.8 per square mile.

In the past 50 years, lightning has killed 52 people (4 in the last 10 years) in Iowa and injured 162. The best way to avoid personal injury from lightning is to study the sky, follow the weather report and if a storm approaches, get to a substantial building and wait 30 minutes until the last clap of thunder before resuming activities.
