Lightning Protection in Alabama

With 52,419 square miles and an average of 824,171 cloud-to-ground flashes a year, lightning is a common occurrence in Alabama with an average of almost 16 strikes per square mile annually. Thunderstorms with hail and lightning are common in the state. The southern part of the state averages 70 to 80 days a year of thunderstorms where the northern portion of the state gets an average of 60 days of thunderstorms.

Alabama ranks 9th in deaths from lightning strikes in the US: in the past 50 years, 109 people have been killed by lightning.  In 2010 alone, two people were killed by lightning strikes and 18 were injured.
