The southern part of the state averages 70 to 80 days a year of thunderstorms where the northern portion of the state gets an average of 60 days of thunderstorms. Alabama ranks 9th in deaths from lightning strikes in the US: in the past 50 years, 109 people have been killed by lightning. In 2010 alone, two people were killed by lightning strikes and 18 were injured.
